Visionary’s IPTV Platform Enhances Guest Experience Across American Cruise Lines Fleet

Visionary’s PackeTV IPTV and Digital Signage System delivers centralized IPTV services including live TV, video on demand and ship information systems for American Cruise Lines

American Cruise Lines has built its reputation on delivering a personalized and immersive travel experience across the waterways and coastal destinations of the United States. Recognized as the nation’s leading river cruise line, the company operates a fleet of more than 20 small ships designed to provide intimate voyages with personalized service and curated cultural programming. As the only American-owned and operated cruise line, American Cruise Lines offers more than 50 itineraries throughout the United States, connecting guests with the country’s history, landscapes and local communities.

Designed to accommodate between 90 and 180 passengers, the company’s ships emphasize comfort, space and individualized service. Guests travel with onboard experts and local guides who provide historical context and regional insight, while enrichment programs both onboard and ashore highlight the culture and heritage of each destination. With discerning travelers who expect the same level of convenience and technology found in leading hotels and resorts, American Cruise Lines began evaluating ways to modernize its onboard television systems.

To support that goal, American Cruise Lines selected marine technology integrator ControlAV to design and deploy a modern onboard video distribution platform. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Miami, Florida, ControlAV specializes in audiovisual and technology integration for the global marine industry. The company operates across multiple international offices, providing system design expertise and project leadership for European deployments. With facilities in six countries across three continents and teams fluent in more than six languages, ControlAV supports cruise operators and shipyards worldwide while navigating the complex regulatory environment that governs maritime technology systems.

Working with American Cruise Lines, ControlAV partnered with Visionary to deploy an IPTV platform across multiple vessels, centralizing television services and onboard video distribution while simplifying system management. “Our guests are experienced travelers who know what they want,” said Brett Bullock, director of guest experience for American Cruise Lines. “Many of them stay in the best hotels throughout the country and throughout the world, and they expect a certain level of technology and convenience. We wanted to create an interactive television system that would meet those expectations.”

“We use Visionary as a solution to deliver destination-relevant video content and provide live TV services. The system allows us to encompass multiple features that had actually never been implemented before within our company.”

The IPTV system consolidates several onboard services into a single interface accessible via stateroom televisions. Guests can access live television channels, video-on-demand movies, safety programming and cruise-specific content while also viewing real-time information about the vessel and itinerary. “We use Visionary as a solution to deliver destination-relevant video content and provide live TV services,” explained Connor McGee, information systems manager for American Cruise Lines. “The system allows us to encompass multiple features that had actually never been implemented before within our company.”

One of the most visible features for passengers is the bow camera channel, which provides a live forward-facing view from the ship. Guests can also view lounge programming through a dedicated lounge camera feed if they prefer to watch entertainment or presentations from their cabins. “In fact, we know immediately when the bow camera system goes down because passengers really love the view,” McGee said. “With our updated camera system, we can display a very clear picture of what is directly in front of the vessel, and passengers enjoy being able to watch exactly what the ship is approaching.”

The system also integrates navigational information directly into the television network. A GPS chart-plotter feed is encoded and distributed via the IPTV platform so guests can view the ship’s current route and location. “For the chart plotter, what we do is take the HDMI signal from that system and encode it into one of the Visionary devices,” McGee said. “From there, the signal is processed and sent back to the endpoint server and ultimately flows into the TV distribution system.”

Beyond live video feeds, the IPTV platform allows the cruise line to manage a wide range of onboard content, including safety materials and itinerary information. The traditional safety videos, which are required by company policy and reviewed by the U.S. Coast Guard, are available on demand through the television interface. “Safety is always our number one priority, so it’s important for guests to be able to access safety information easily,” Bullock said. “Through the IPTV system, guests can watch the safety video on demand whenever they want.”

The centralized architecture also simplifies content updates and channel management. American Cruise Lines can quickly add new television channels or movies without requiring major infrastructure changes. “The advantage of an IPTV system is not only the quality of the stream but also the improved latency and faster delivery to endpoints,” McGee said. “For example, we are now able to integrate new sports channels or television channels in a matter of hours. Previously, we would have had to completely redesign the system to accomplish something similar.”

Visionary’s IPTV platform enables American Cruise Lines to expand its onboard programming offerings. Through integrations with content providers such as Swank, American Cruise Lines can offer premium first-release Hollywood films as video-on-demand titles for guests, and live sports programming, including NFL games. In addition to entertainment programming, the platform supports onboard activity schedules, promotional content highlighting future cruise itineraries and other informational channels designed to enhance guest engagement. The centralized platform provides the ability to collect operational insights and data analytics related to system usage, helping American Cruise Lines better understand how guests interact with onboard content and services.

System flexibility was an important consideration for the integration team responsible for deploying the platform across multiple vessels. “We like to provide a turnkey solution to our clients, and Visionary’s system turned out to be a great fit,” said Jensen Sostre, general manager for Control AV. “Their platform is very easy to integrate, easy to customize and very responsive when it comes to support.”

Another key benefit of the system is its compatibility with a wide range of displays, allowing American Cruise Lines to maintain a consistent user interface across different types of televisions installed throughout the ships. “Visionary was able to customize the video-on-demand interface and the channel presentation so everything looked consistent across all of the displays on the vessel,” said Amir El Yordi, president for ControlAV. “That capability was key for the project.”

The system’s remote management capabilities are particularly valuable given the cruise line’s operational footprint across multiple regions of the United States. “As a growing company, we do not currently have an IT technician on every vessel,” McGee said. “With the help of Visionary and the system’s remote capabilities, we can access every system remotely from anywhere in the United States where our ships operate.”

Technical support was another factor in the partnership. Visionary’s global support team provides around-the-clock assistance when issues arise. “The Visionary team has been great to work with,” Bullock said. “There are not a lot of problems, but when issues do arise we need immediate support, and they are always there for us.”

American Cruise Lines has worked with Visionary on approximately six vessel designs and completed six installations across its fleet, with additional deployments planned as new ships enter service. “I have personally been working with Visionary for a little over a year with the cruise line and about a year before that through the shipyard,” McGee said. “This vessel represents the sixth successful Visionary installation in our fleet, and we anticipate many more in the future.”

As the cruise line continues to expand, the IPTV platform provides a scalable foundation for onboard entertainment, operational information and passenger services. Visionary’s PackeTV IPTV and Digital Signage System is an on-premise platform designed to distribute live television, video-on-demand content, custom channels and digital signage across IP networks. The system supports both multicast and unicast streaming and is managed through a secure web-based interface for centralized control. PackeTV can be delivered on preconfigured hardware or deployed within a customer’s preferred virtual machine environment and does not require ongoing cloud-based licensing. Developed on decades of IP video research and development, the platform is designed for scalable deployments in hospitality, corporate, healthcare and education environments where reliable, network-based content distribution is required.
